PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES

·         Chief, Biochemistry Section (Environmental Health Laboratory Branch, Richmond, CA 94804, Dec. 18, 2007 – Present): Lead and manage biochemistry section with 16 scientists and 1 administration staff to develop laboratory capacity for the implementation of California Environmental Contaminants Biomonitoring Program. Oversee over million dollar research CDC grant to implement the laboratory biomonitoring program. Develop research proposal for the research grant application and write scientific paper for publication. Plan and equip the laboratory with state of art instruments. Plan and monitor laboratory budget and resources. Lead analytical method development and validation. Coordinate with inter state agencies and federal agencies to conduct public health research and investigation.  

·         Research Scientist IV (Genetic Disease Laboratory, Richmond, CA 94804: July, 2005 – Dec., 17, 2007): Lead scientist in Genetic Disease Laboratory for newborn screening test of steroid profile, amino acids and other biomarkers for certain genetic disorders using HPLC – Mass Spectrometer (HPLC/MS/MS). Plan, development and implementation of new test programs in the laboratory. Participate in laboratory management by working with the laboratory chief. Develop advanced HPLC/MS/MS screening methods for the identification of disorders. Develop software solutions for laboratory automation and data process. Routinely review and release analytical data. Draft laboratory report and prepare scientific publications. Experienced with HPLC/MS/MS maintenance and troubleshooting. Developed solutions to streamline laboratory workflow and dataflow for enhancing sample throughput. Automated MS/MS data processes from batch building to automated report generation. Manage the laboratory QA/AC reports – Proficiency Test report, Patient Trend repot and monthly QC report for all laboratory tests in GDL. Perform statistical data analysis.

·         Environmental Biochemist (Hazardous Materials Laboratory, Berkeley , CA 94704 : March, 2001 – June, 2005): Supervisor for Biomonitoring Group and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) Group in HML. Principal investigator for Environmental Contaminants Program sponsored by Department of the Interior; San Francisco Bay Fish study funded by Environment Working Group, Co-PI for Human Milk Study funded by EPA and PI for human milk study funded by Northwest Environment Watch. Developed environmental and biological monitoring programs for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) with Federal and State governments. Implemented LIMS; developed various data process and report generation programs in HML. Experienced with the application and maintenance of high resolution mass spectrometer.

·         Research Scientist II (Hazardous Materials Laboratory, Berkeley, CA 94704: June, 1998 – March, 2001): Scientist for analytical method development in GC/MS; Investigated the level, trend and distribution of organo chlorine compounds; Developed isotope dilution GC/MS and GC/NCI-MS method for congener PCB, PBDE and organo chlorine pesticides in environmental and biological matrices.

·         Public Health Chemist II (Hazardous Materials Laboratory, Berkeley, CA 94704: Dec. 1996 – June, 1998): Chemist for analytical method development and routine sample analysis.  Analytical method development and routine sample preparation and analysis. Developed software for laboratory automation, QA/QC and statistical analysis.

·         Research Associate (Tübingen University, Tübingen, Germany, Nov. 1988 - May 1992): Investigated the sources, fate and distribution of PCDD/F in environment. Developed analytical method for PXDD and PXDF, PCP and other halogenated compounds for environment samples. Designed software for cluster analysis, principal component analysis, partial least square regression and other pattern recognition methods.

·         Research Associate and doctoral student (Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian, China, Dec. 1985 - Nov. 1988): Software development in MS data base system design; Developed ASES/MS spectral elucidation system using mass spectra. Extensive experience in GC/MS, NMR, IR, UV and computer languages such as C, Assembler, Pascal, Fortran, Dbase  and Forth and operating systems including UNIX, RSX and algorithm.

·         Teacher for Analytical Chemistry (Northwestern University, China, May 2005 – Nov. 2005): teach undergraduate analytical chemistry.
